The cities of Thessaloniki and Larissa will be put into a mini lockdown in Greece, the government stated on Thursday, in order to spread the curb of coronavirus transmission in the regions.

The measures, which include a nighttime curfew from 1:00 AM to 6:00 AM and a ban on music at bars and restaurants, will be in place for a week starting on Friday.

Thessaloniki, located in northern Greece, is the country’s second-largest city after the capital of Athens.

Larissa, located in the central region of the country, is the fifth most populous city in Greece.

While coronavirus infections have begun to stabilize across the country, and 58% of Greeks have been fully vaccinated against the virus, cases have been increasing in Thessaloniki and Larissa recently.

Greece has been enforcing measures such as these in order to control the virus across the country, and the government claims that surges of Covid-19 may continue until the country meets its goal of having 70% of the population vaccinated.

2,232 cases of coronavirus in Greece, 33 deaths

Greece recorded 2,232 total cases were recorded across the country on Thursday, and a total of 150,433 tests for the virus were conducted in the country, bringing the positivity rate to 1.48%.

The average age of those who tested positive for the virus in Greece is 39, and the average age of those who have died with the virus is 78.

A total of four of Thursday’s cases were identified during routine Covid-19 testing of tourists at the country’s borders.

Currently, there are 326 patients with the coronavirus on ventilators in Greece.

Tragically, 33 people suffering from the coronavirus passed away in the country over the past 24-hour period.

426 coronavirus cases in Attica, 314 in Thessaloniki

Of the 2,130 new coronavirus cases recorded in Greece in the past 24 hours, 511 were located in Attica, home to the Greek capital city of Athens.

In the city of Athens, a total of 132 cases of Covid-19 were identified Thursday.

In Thessaloniki, the second-largest city in Greece, 314 cases of the virus were identified on Thursday.

Over 600,000 cases of Covid-19 recorded in Greece

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 655,767 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country, including all those who have recovered from the virus.

Of the 326 patients intubated currently, 79.8% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions.

The majority of those who are on ventilators in Greece, or 89.88%, are unvaccinated against the coronavirus.

Additionally, a total of 3,160 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

The 33 new deaths recorded on Thursday bring the total number of fatalities in the country to 14,828; 95.4% of those who have passed away with Covid-19 were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.
